Torque Converter Doesn\'t Lock Up

Torque converter wont lock up. The transmission doesnt understand that there is such a heavy load on the back or that you are on a slight incline or that you have a stronger than normal headwind.

Torque Converter Functions Parts Working Principles

I do not see any movement in the tachometer or speedometer.

Torque converter doesn\'t lock up. Try starting it in neutral and putting it in drive without your foot on the brake I know the car will take off in quite a hurry if it doesnt stall but its an easy way to check for this If it doesnt stall apply the brakes and if it stalls then it definitely is a bad lockup. However when Im cruising along and the TC locks up and then I come to a stop the converter tries to stay locked until it stalls and then unlocks. You can force the torque convertor to stay locked in 3rd and OD.

After playing around a little more lockup definitely seems dependent on the transmission fluid temperature. When you take your foot off the gas in 3rd or OD the torque convertor unlocks and then relocks once the gas pedal is pushed down. Im going about 2k rpm in OD at about 55-60.

The TCM provides 12-volts to the On-Off solenoids eg. Whether the TC locks up or not follow the troubleshooting tree to the next step cooler line surge test. So my torque converter will lock and unlock just fine when driving accelerating coasting and accelerating it works flawless.

The torque converter problem in simple terms can be described as a lock-up. It uses the oil. I do not use the car much.

For transmission to lockup however some requirements follow. In this video I explain what to look for when your torque converter clutch is locked up. Joined Feb 9 2009 4 Posts.

When driving between 35-55 mph up a gradual slope in my 92 Mercury Sable wagon it has 125K miles on it I often feel a quick shudder in the chassis. Could be a bad seal in the TC that just wont engage the clutch when warm or a. Wait for a few minutes for the engine to warm up then gently press the accelerator twice and rev up the engine.

I have a 96 f350 psd. It sure does-but thats the point. The torque converter should Lock-up.

Turn the ignition key and start up the engine. The thing about fluid temp it is thicker when cooler and thins out as it heats. The speed at which a lockup mechanism automatically activates is about 64 kph.

The torque converter lockup clutch is electronically controlled by the TCM transmission control module and a PWM pulse width modulated solenoid. Slipping reduces fuel economy and heat can damage the converter and the transmission. The solenoid valve controls the fluid pressure of the hydraulic transmission which enters the lock-up clutch.

However when the engine turns more slowly it causes the torque converter to slip creating heat. When Im cruising down the road at whatever speed in whatever gearmy torque converter doesnt seem to be locking up. Probably a bad torque converter lock up solenoid.

I think the lock-up torque converter is slipping in and out of the lock-ed up position. Answer ID 78 Published 08242001 0408 PM. Shift solenoids but the PWM voltage varies depending on the percentage of modulation requested by the TCM.

Discussion Starter 1 Feb 16 2009. The torque converter clutch solenoid is a common part that fails within the automatic transmission. It wont shift gears until it hits 3000 rpm or so in towhaul mode which is normal but still the TC wont lock up 1 -.

If I hit the gas when slowing down it will unlock and stay unlocked. Jump to Latest Follow 1 - 5 of 5 Posts. IMO this causes unnecessary wear and heat.

Lock-up eliminates the slippage which reduces heat and improves fuel economy. The transmission is shifting just. This can cause various symptoms such as slipping overheating and rough acceleration.

When I give it gas the rpms go up but the truck doesnt move much faster like its slipping. Thats the other thing it doesnt lock up on its own in towhaul mode either. At approximately 35 mph connect the other end of the test light or jumper wire to terminal F at the ALDL.

Applies to traditional step geared automatic transmissions. The Working Of Lock Up Torque Converters A lock up clutch is engaged as soon as the engine and the transmission run at the same speed approximately. A rather simple test can determine whether the torque converter is failingThis is how to carry it out.

Discussion Starter 1 Nov 27 2004. I took my truck to a transmission and they said its an electrical issue then i took it to an electric place and they fixed the tps sensor and cleared the code but still no od or it goes into od but the torque converter doesnt lock up bc it goes into third then it shift but like doesnt shift im going 69 with rpms at 2800 and then it. A torque converter does not work like a basement sump pump to move as much fluid as possible as quickly as possible.

There is no noise. Once it returns to its idle state press the. How to Test a Torque Converter.

The result of all of this is a transmission that will repetitively jump between torque converter lockup and unlock excessive heat and excessive fuel consumption. The shudder may happen just once or several times. Testing for Bad Torque Converters.

The torque converter is the part that allows fluids to pass from the engine to the transmission. Bad Torque Converter Noise Is car torque problem a big issue. When the solenoid is energized it redirects the fluid flow back through the input shaft to put pressure against the clutch assembly allowing it to engage with the front of the torque converter.

Doesnt this reduce the torque converters capacity to pump oil. Torque converter lock-up is engaged through a solenoid mounted inside the transmission. The solution is to lock the converter.
